Initially, we prioritized investor support and risk assessment, and the mining sector, with some attention to environmental and social assessment, rural development, and business conditions.

Economic Opportunities for Vulnerable Urban Youth and Women. The “Innovative Financing Models to Increase Economic Opportunities for Vulnerable Urban Youth and Women in Mozambique” project assessed the potential of innovative financing models to support vulnerable urban youth and women excluded from economic access opportunities. It included analysis of activities promoting female economic empowerment, and steps to implement recommended financing models.

Business Plan Competition to Promote Youth Jobs Growth. The “Market Study for a Business Plan Competition to Promote Jobs Growth in Mozambique” assessed the interest of SMEs and entrepreneurs in a business plan competition to support jobs growth. Survey data from 300 SMEs would also help design a program to address youth employment access. The survey was cancelled when it was partly complete due to Covid-19. However, the contract was modified to analyse how SMEs were affected by Covid-19, based on a telephone survey.

Contract Farming Costs and Benefits. The impact of contract farming on the production and well-being of contract growers, and on participating aggregator firms, was analyzed by the “Mozambique Agricultural Aggregator Pilot, MAAP”. The task included three annual surveys of initially 2,500 smallholders concerning the employment and welfare impact of contract farming, and annual surveys of the nine participating aggregators that focused on the costs and benefits of their contract farming programs.

Evaluation of a Fund to Strengthen Smallholders and SMEs. The “Catalytic Fund for Innovation and Demonstration” aimed to improve the capacity of smallholders and SMEs in the Zambezi Valley and Nacala Corridor to access markets and technology via linkages with agribusiness. The impact on smallholders of the 14 participating agribusiness subprojects was evaluated through two annual surveys of 1,600 households, and a survey of subproject implementation progress. The index of women’s economic empowerment in agriculture was calculated from household survey data.

Environmental and Social Assessment of a Transmission Line. The “Update of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of the 400 kV Transmission Line between Nacala and Chimuara” revised the environmental and social impact assessment of the 840 Km transmission line to reflect changes in the route, population numbers and location, and property ownership. It included a survey of 3,700 households and the mapping of affected household land and infrastructure, and the preparation of a Resettlement Action Plan.

Credit Line for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The “Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Project” funded a credit line to BCI (Mozambique’s largest bank), and provided related technical assistance. Project tasks included supporting market development for energy efficiency and renewable energy, assessing bank staff training needs, training bank staff and applicant businesses, and assessing funding proposals from a technical perspective.

Women-owned SMEs and Individual Women Traders in Cross-border Trade. The “Baseline Assessment in Mozambique of Women-owned Small and Medium Enterprises and Women Traders Involved in Cross-border Trade” surveyed women traders and SMEs at Ressano Garcia on the Mozambique/South Africa border. It investigated the impact of government policies and measures concerning Covid-19 on trading options, and on the markets and other selling locations away from the border that were used by the traders and SMEs.

Creation of an Industrial Free Zone Based on a Steel and Vanadium Project. In the “Investment Options and the Establishment of an Industrial Free Zone” activity, OzMozis identified ways for Baobab Resources to gain a favourable classification under the Investment Law for its planned steel and vanadium project in Tete province; the establishment of an Industrial Free Zone was recommended. Once government accepted the idea in principle, OzMozis worked with Baobab on its successful IFZ proposal.

Evaluation of the Chire Limestone Deposit in the Context of the National Cement Industry. The Chire limestone deposit in Zambézia province is a potentially significant resource for cement production. The evaluation reviews the deposit’s current and potential place in the national cement production industry, covering its technical, economic, marketing and qualitative aspects.

Enhancing the Capabilities of Mozambican SMEs to be Effectively Integrated in the Oil and Gas Value Chain in the Rovuma Basin The study investigated how Mozambique could realize its local content ambitions by maximizing the participation of local enterprises, especially SMEs, as suppliers of goods and services in the oil and gas value chain in the Rovuma Basin. African Mining Study Tour Alumni Learning Forum in Mozambique The forum expanded networks among study tour alumni, and continued learning on local procurement, mining finance and taxation, and skills development associated with mining.
